This 2009 exhibition of drawings by Derek Hampson explored the link between art and pathos through representations of victims of war.
A basic function of rhetorical speech is to arouse the pathe (emotions) of those listening, this is largely achieved through the use of tropes, figures of speech. Tropes are intrinsically visual, this project sets out to demonstrate that the work of the trope resides in its visuality rather than in the medium through which it is expressed, i.e. speech or drawing.
